James Rosenquist ”F-111” Exhibition Poster 1965 - James Rosenquist (American, 1933-2017). Lithograph poster print on paper titled ”F-111 (Castelli Gallery Poster), ” 1965. After a large scale painting titled ”F-111” Rosenquist had created during 1964-1965 for the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York. Depicting one of the twenty-three sections reimagined as a collage, this work creates a striking juxtaposition between consumer culture, domestic innocence, and postwar militarism. By integrating everyday commercial imagery, such as wallpaper and lightbulbs, with military motifs, it critiques the normalization of war in mid-century American life. Pencil signed and dated 1965 along the lower left. With the artist's obituary adhered along the verso. The title ”F-111” refers to the F-111 fighter-bomber, developed during one of the most turbulent decades in U.S. history. Rosenquist viewed the aircraft as both an economic and military symbol, creating jobs while advancing American power. He described the work as “a plane flying through the flak of an economy, ” with the young girl beneath the metallic hairdryer serving as its symbolic pilot and central figure. Condition: There are two vertical incised tears that extend from the lower extreme edge to the upper edge along the right side. The sheet is unevenly toned. Scattered, light foxing throughout. There is a small area of soiling along the right lower edge. Framed under glass. Light wear to the frame.
