Early Hugh Kappel ”Man Eater” Oil Painting 1944 - Hugh Kappel (American, 1910-1982). Oil on canvas abstract painting titled ”Man Eater, ” 1944. Signed and dated along the upper right; further signed along the lower left. Titled along the verso. Kappel was one of the founding members of the New York Abstract Expressionist movement. He exhibited at both the seminal 9th Street Show and the following Stable Gallery Show. Sight; height: 26 in x 21 in. Framed; height: 31 1/4 in x width: 27 in x depth: 1 1/4 in. Condition: Cracquelure throughout. The colors are bold and deep. Some minute flaking present with small losses. Light wear to the frame.
