Hugh Kappel Abstract Oil Painting 1956 - Hugh Kappel (American, 1910-1982). Oil on canvas painting depicting an abstract composition, 1956-57. Signed and dated along the lower right; further signed and dated along the verso. Ink-stamped ”The Estate of Hubert Kappel” along the verso. This lot includes a copy of the Birdsall-Haase Gallery catalog “Hugh Kappel Paintings: 1936-1976,” which the work is featured in. Reference: “Hugh Kappel Paintings: 1936-1976,” Birdsall-Haase Gallery, 2011, pg. 56. Kappel was one of the founding members of the New York Abstract Expressionist movement. He exhibited at both the seminal 9th Street Show and the following Stable Gallery Show. Sight; height: 24 in x width: 30 in. Framed; height: 27 1/2 in x width: 33 in x depth: 2 1/4 in. Condition: There are no visible tears or losses. The colors are bold and deep. Light wear along the extreme edges of the canvas. Light wear to the frame.
