Robert Kulicke was a painter, frame maker, and teacher whose most enduring contribution to the visual arts was his reinvention of picture frame design; he was also recognized as a painter of small, delicate still lifes. Both disciplines converge in ”Seascape, ” which is set within a light-colored wood frame of Kulicke's own design; its pale, weathered tone is in direct dialogue with the coastal subject it presents. The painting is inset flush into the frame rather than merely bordered by it, a construction method reflecting Kulicke's conviction that the frame should be conceived alongside the work itself. As Kulicke stated, ”the frame is the ultimate presentation, the reward for painting the picture.” In this piece, frame and painting are inseparable, realized as a single unified object.
