Hugh Kappel Abstract Oil on Canvas Painting 1948 - Hugh Kappel (American, 1910-1982). Oil on canvas painting depicting an abstract composition, 1948. Signed and dated along the upper right corner. With a Hiro Fine Art label affixed to the verso. Reference: ”Hugh Kappel Paintings: 1936-1976,” Birdsall-Haase Gallery, 2011, pg. 18. Kappel was one of the founding members of the New York Abstract Expressionist movement. He exhibited at both the seminal 9th Street Show and the following Stable Gallery Show. Unframed; height: 38 in x width: 28 in. Framed; height: 39 1/2 in x width: 29 1/2 in x depth: 1 1/2 in. Condition: There are no signs of inpainting under UV light. Moisture exposure to the lower quarter of the work: there is a tideline visible along the verso and there is craquelure to the paint along the recto in this area. Light wear to the frame.
