Po Shun Leong ”Landscape” Architectural Wood Box - Po Shun Leong (British, b. 1941). Carved decorative wood art box with lighting component titled ”Landscape.” Crafted from the following woods: cherry burl, mahogany, buckeye, holly, Pernambuco, ebony, and purple heart. Featuring a total of 16 hidden compartments and drawers with lined black felt interiors. The sail boat is a hidden drawer containing an extra lightbulb for the lighting component and a small brush for dusting. Electrical component held within a partially concealed alcove above the central, carved landscape motif. Incised signature and dated ”Oct, 1994” along the lower right side of the sculpture. Lower right compartment contains a Po Shun Leong card with handwritten description of wood types and printed care instructions. With a printed label adhered along the verso providing additional care instructions. Po Shun Leong is an England born, Southern California-based sculptor, furniture maker, and former architect. Leong is a self-taught woodworker who incorporates various types of woods in his work, some of which include debris from natural disasters or scraps from other artist’s works. He is known for his elaborate and highly-decorated wooden boxes that are a part of many museum collections. His work can be found in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the White House Craft Collection, and in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Height: 22 1/2 in x width: 20 1/4 in x depth: 7 1/2 in. Condition: The sculpture is structurally sound and stable. There are no major breaks, cracks, or losses. Each of the drawers open with ease. Some small, scattered losses to the finish, particularly evident along the lower third. Dust gathered along the recessed areas. Light wear along the underside. Lighting element functions, however not tested for longterm use.
