Ivor Pengelly Francis Abstract Geometric Painting - Ivor Pengelly Francis (Australian, 1906-1993). Oil on canvas abstract geometric painting, 1967. Depicting a lively blend of geometric shapes, including sharp black lines, orange sails, and purple circular forms against a deep blue ground. Signed and dated along the upper right. Francis belonged to a core group of young artists, including Ruth Tuck, Shirley Adams, Dave Dallwitz, and Douglas Roberts, who staged the Royal South Australian Society of Arts' first modernist exhibition in 1942. Throughout his career, he worked as a painter, newspaper art critic, and teacher. Today, he is celebrated as South Australia's premier surrealist artist. Sight; height: 42 3/4 in x width: 46 1/2 in. Framed; height: 44 in x width: 48 in x depth: 1 1/2 in. Condition: The colors are bold and bright. There are regions of inpainting along the upper right quadrant and the extreme edges of the work, visible under UV light. There is a stitched repaired tear along the lower third of the work, spanning the width of the painting; the seam of the repair is visible along the recto. Light craquelure throughout, particularly along the seam of the repair. Some where including minute areas of flaking to the pigment and scuffs along the extreme edges. There are stretcher bar marks along the perimeter of the work and diagonally along the upper half of the work. Soiling to the verso. There are several regions visible along the verso where the canvas has been wax re-lined: along the upper right corner of the verso, the lower edge of the verso, the left third of the upper edge, and the left edge. In addition to wax re-lining along the left and upper left edges, there is an additional layer of canvas underneath the wax. The staples are newer and the canvas appears to have been restretched. Light wear to the frame.
