Rufino Tamayo ”Figura Hieratica” Etching - Rufino del Carmen Arellanes Tamayo (Mexican, 1899-1991). Etching on handmade paper titled ”Figura Hieratica, ” 1979. Depicting an elongated double handled vase featuring warm, earthy tones of deep terracotta, burnt orange, and rust. Signed in white pencil along the lower right; numbered 22/99 along the lower left. Rufino Tamayo’s bold, symbolic paintings and prints unite elements of European modernism, Mexican folk art, and pre-Columbian ceramics. Tamayo filled his paintings and prints with emotive color palettes and blocky, simplistic compositions, both references to indigenous motifs and the Cubist figurations of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. He worked in the department of ethnographic drawing for the Museo Nacional de Arqueologia in Mexico City. There, he immersed himself in the collection of pre-Columbian art which is reflected within this work. Sight; height: 29 1/2 in x width: 21 1/2 in. Framed; height: 39 in x width: 31 in x depth: 1 1/2 in. Condition: There are no visible tears or losses. The colors are bold and bright. Due to the deckled edges it is difficult to discern if there are any minute to small losses along the perimeter, however, none are visually evident. Undulation to the sheet, particularly along the perimeter. Work is floated in frame atop a nonacidic mat. Framed under plexiglass. Light wear to the frame, including some fraying to the fabric lined mat border. Work not inspected out of frame.
