Rufino Tamayo ”Dos Cabezas de Mujer” Lithograph - Rufino del Carmen Arellanes Tamayo (Mexican, 1899-1991). Lithograph print on paper titled ”Dos Cabezas de Mujer” (Two Heads of Women), 1969. Depicting two female figures rendered in a semi-abstract, modernist style influenced by Pre-Columbian art. Featuring a figure on the left outlined in red with a white interior and a figure on the right outlined in green with a black interior, each against a textured, grey ground. Pencil signed along the lower right; editioned ”H.C.” along the lower left. Rufino Tamayo’s bold, symbolic paintings and prints unite elements of European modernism, Mexican folk art, and Pre-Columbian ceramics. Tamayo filled his paintings and prints with emotive color palettes and blocky, simplistic compositions, both references to indigenous motifs and the Cubist figurations of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.
