John Gilmore Wolcott ”St. Jean de Luz” Painting - John Gilmore Wolcott (American, 1891-1965). Oil on canvas laid board painting titled ”St. Jean de Luz”, 1928. Depicting Priscilla Wolcott, the artist's wife, reading a book on the beach with figures swimming in the vibrant blue water in the background. Signed, titled, and dated along the upper right. With an inscription along the verso reading ”Mrs. Wolcott (Priscilla) in foreground. Painted in France on our honeymoon in 1928. By John G. Wolcott.” With an Arvest Galleries label adhered along the upper stretcher of the frame along the verso. Provenance: Arvest Galleries, Boston, MA, November 23, 1988; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Unframed; height: 6 1/4 in x width: 8 1/2 in. Framed; height: 13 in x width: 15 in x depth: 2 1/2 in. Condition: The painting is in good condition overall. There are no visible areas of restoration under UV. There are two pin holes along the lower quadrant, one near the seated woman in the foreground, the other along the left area of the beach. There is some surface dirt. The frame has wear.
