Walter Emerson Baum ”Saucon” Painting - Walter Emerson Baum (American, 1884-1956). Oil on canvas impressionist townscape painting titled ”Saucon, ” early 20th century. Depicting the rural town of Saucon in Pennsylvania during early spring. Featuring a winding creak with a makeshift log bridge along the foreground. A grassy green field slopes gently up to a cluster of red, rustic buildings along the center. A line of budding spring trees stand against a pale, blue sky along the background. Signed along the lower left; titled along the verso. Walter Emerson Baum, born in Sellersville, Pennsylvania, in 1884, is best known for his Impressionist snow scenes. He was a prominent member of the New Hope Impressionist movement, also known as Pennsylvania Impressionism, an early 20th century American art movement centered in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Led by artists William Lathrop and Edward Redfield, the movement profoundly influenced Baum's artistic development. Like many New Hope Impressionists, Baum often painted en plein air, capturing the rural landscapes and farmland of Pennsylvania before widespread development transformed them.
