Pair Will Hicok Low ”Autumn” & ”Winter” Paintings - Will Hicok Low (American, 1853-1932). Pair of oil on canvas paintings titled ”Allegory of Autumn” and ”Allegory of Winter, ” 1898. ”Autumn” depicting a man in a leopard-print garment alongside a woman in a flowing pink dress surrounded by lush foliage. ”Winter” depicting the same figures dressed in heavier brown and red clothing, gathering wood together in a starker, snowy landscape. Each signed and dated along the lower left. Provenance: Chapeller Galleries, New York, NY; acquired from previous by a private collection; Christie's, New York, NY, ”Fine American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, ” September 27, 2004, Lot 150; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. (Each) Unframed; height: 28 1/2 in x width: 19 1/4 in. Framed; height: 36 1/2 in x width: 27 in x depth: 2 in. Condition: To the ”Allegory of Winter” There is horizontal craquelure forming, mainly along the top of the canvas. The canvas is slightly loose. To the ”Allegory of Autumn” there is a small puncture to the canvas near the center, more visible along the verso. There do not appear to be any restorations or inpainting when inspected under UV light. Heavy wear to the frames including soiling or discoloration to the rabbats.
