William Horton ”Broadstairs Beach” Painting - William Samuel Horton (American, 1865-1936). Oil on board impressionist seascape painting titled ”Broadstairs Beach, ” 1906. Depicting a large, dense gathering of English beachgoers gathered around to watch a performance. Thick, textured impasto brushstrokes bring the vibrant colors to life, beautifully capturing the play of light along the audience's clothes. Featuring a white donkey standing along the lower right with the calm sea stretching across the upper half under an overcast sky. Signed along the lower right corner. With a wooden plaque affixed along the lower section of the frame bearing artist's name, dates, and title. Inscribed title and date along the verso. With a Christie's label adhered along the verso; also with a partial Vose Galleries label adhered along the verso. William Horton was a close friend and collaborator of Claude Monet during his time in Paris, where he devoted his life to exploring the principles of Impressionism. While deeply influenced by Monet’s ideas, Horton developed a distinctive artistic vision of his own. His enduring fascination with light, color, and atmosphere is evident throughout his work, reflecting a unique interpretation of his mentor’s philosophy. There may be a small area of inpainting along the upper left corner. Some light wear along the extreme edges of the painting. Some wear to the frame including seperation of the corner joints and small losses of the gilt plaster.
