Ogden Minton Pleissner ”On the Shore” Painting - Ogden Minton Pleissner (American, 1905-1983). Oil on canvas laid board seascape painting titled ”On the Shore, ” 20th century. Depicting the dramatic shoreline of Nova Scotia, Canada. Featuring a sandy, rocky shoreline littered with several weathered wooden fishing boats along the foreground. Leading the viewer's gaze from the midground, a slanting row of humble seaside cottages guides the eye to the background, where a massive, verdant bluff drops sharply into the cobalt blue ocean. Signed along the lower left. Pencil signed and titled along the verso. With three Christie's labels adhered along the verso. Shortly after graduating from the Brooklyn Friends School, Pleissner enrolled at the Art Students League of New York, where he studied for four years, completing his training in 1927. There, he learned anatomy and drawing from plaster casts under George Bridgeman and studied with National Academy member Frank DuMond. DuMond also led summer classes in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, which Pleissner attended. During one of these trips to Nova Scotia, Pleissner painted ”By the Shore, ” a region renowned for its dramatic coastline and rich maritime history. Unframed; height: 12 in x width: 16 in. Framed; height: 17 1/2 in x width: 21 1/2 in x depth: 2 in. Condition: The painting is in good condition overall. There are no visilble areas of restoration under UV. There is some frame wear to the edges of the painting, causing some losses. The verso has some soiling, and tidelines along the left edge (doesn't appear to have affected the recto). The label is skimmed. The frame has wear.
