William Glackens ”Children in Courtyard” Pastel - William James Glackens (American, 1870-1938). Pastel on paper drawing titled ”Children in Courtyard, ” early 20th century. Depicting two young girls reading while sitting together on a yellow, textured hay ground. A flock of hens meander around them searching for feed amongst the straw. Along the background a rustic wooden chicken coop in muted browns and blues complements the golden, sun-drenched courtyard. Initialed along the lower right. Glackens was an American realist painter and one of the founders of the Ashcan School of American art. His vivid colors, handling of light, and gestural brushstrokes marked his distinct style, which focused on everyday life in working class American environments. Traveling to Europe throughout much of his life, he functioned as a bridge between the United States and Western Europe, while fostering the development of American visual art. His works can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
