Anne Carleton ”Ongonquit Beach” Painting - Anne Carleton (American, 1878-1968). Oil on board painting titled ”Ongonquit Beach, ” early 20th century. Depicting a vibrant impressionist beach scene rendered with heavy, impasto brushstrokes. Featuring a crowded sandy beach with figures lounging on the sunlit shore while others find respite from the heat under colorful beach umbrellas. Signed along the lower left. With a wooden plaque affixed along the lower section of the frame bearing artist's name and title. Ogunquit, Maine, where this piece was created and depicts, has a rich history of female painters dating back to the early 1900s. Many of these trailblazing artists gathered for the Charles Woodbury Summer School of Painting and Drawing. They captured the bright light and scenic coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. In 2021, The Ogunquit Museum of American Art hosted a dedicated exhibit called ”Remember the Ladies, ” showcasing the personal and artistic stories of these trailblazers which included works by Anne Carleton. Framed; height: 13 1/2 in x width: 15 1/2 in x depth: 2 1/4 in. Condition: The painting is in good condition overall. There are no visible areas of restoration under UV. There are some visible surface marks along the sky, they don't appear to penetrate the paint layer. There is some soiling along the verso, the frame has some wear.
