Victor Arnautoff ”Mother” Oil Painting - Victor Arnautoff (Russian/American, 1896-1979). Oil on canvas painting titled ”Mother.” depicting a seated woman sewing with a two starred banner hanging above her. The woman is Victor’s wife, Lydia Blonsky, and the two stars represent when their two sons were sent off to fight in WWII. An exhibition label from the San Francisco Museum of Art affixed to the verso. Provenance: By repute, purchased from the estate of the artist's son. Exhibition: San Francisco Museum of Art, ca. 1945. Sight; height: 35 in x width: 25 3/4 in. Framed; height: 36 in x width: 29 in x depth: 2 1/2 in. Condition: The varnish is toned. The canvas is loose, resulting in some unevenness along the lower third. There are scattered small areas of flaking to the pigment throughout. There is a scratch along the right side, resulting in a small loss to the pigment. Light wear to the frame. Work not inspected out of frame.
