19th c. American School Portrait of a Woman - American school oil on canvas portrait painting depicting a woman in three-quarters view. She wears a sumptuous black gown trimmed with crushed black velvet. An ornate gold floral brooch is clasped at her throat, which is trimmed by white lace, and accented by a long gold necklace. She wears a black cap or veil. Likely mid- to late-19th century. Unframed; height: 36 in x width: 28 in. Framed; height: 40 in x width: 32 1/2 in x depth: 1 3/4 in. Condition: The colors are bold and bright. There is craquelure and light scuffs throughout the work. There are stretcher bar marks; there is a spiral craquelure centered on the woman's hairpiece; there is another along the woman's right armpit. There is a repaired tear in the upper right quadrant that fluoresces under UV light; corresponding repair visible along the verso. There is light wear to the frame.
