Narcisse Virgilio Diaz ”Bacchus” Oil Painting - Narcisse Virgilio Diaz de la Pena (French, 1807-1876). Oil on canvas painting titled ”Bacchus, ” depicting a mythical scene with four partially nude figures. With a plaque along the lower edge with the artist's name. The National Gallery Export stamp of Hungary stamped along the verso. Inscribed illegibly in white pigment along the verso. Provenance: By repute, Continental Fine Art Gallery, 1986; Private Collection; thence by descent. Unframed; height: 18 in x width: 12 1/4 in. Framed; height: 22 1/4 in x width: 17 in x depth: 2 in. Condition: There are no tears. There is some craquelure. There is a small loss to the pigment along the lower right edge. Due to a very thick and discolored varnish, it is difficult to ascertain whether there are areas of restoration or inpainting. Wear to the extreme edges, including some small losses to the pigment, and to the verso, including soiling and wear to the stretcher bars. A few small chips to the glass along the extreme edges. There are losses to the ornamental frame. The frame is brittle and may sustain additional losses in storage, handling, and/or transport.
