Set 27 Spode ”Tree of Life” Dessert Plates - Spode, England. Group of 27 pattern 282 ”Tree of Life” porcelain dessert plates, ca. 1813. Marked with an imitation Chinese double ring mark and inscribed with pattern number in iron red. Provenance: Rochelle Thomas of Palm Beach - Fine Antique Porcelain, Palm Beach, FL, April 20, 1981; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. This pattern was first introduced by Josiah Spode II ca. 1801 and depicts a central gnarled tree with blossoms and bands of decoration. It is designed after Japanese Kakiemon designs. The pattern proved so popular that it was reproduced in 1813 as pattern 2038. (Each) Diameter: 8 1/2 in. Condition: There are several plates with signs of repair and restoration that fluoresce under UV light, especially along the rims; four plates with some toning to the overspray and one plate with large areas of flaking to the overspray along the underside of the rim. One plate with large and heavily toned signs of restoration and repair throughout; heavy crazing to the glaze along this plate. Two plates with large repaired breaks, one along the rim and the other spanning the length of the plate; toning to the repairs. Five plates with small hairline cracks along the rim, each approximately measuring less than 1/2 inch. One plate with three large repaired cracks along the rim. Four plates with no major breaks or losses to the porcelain; one of these plates with signs of restoration and painting to the blue circular marks along the underside. All plates with signs of light wear and faint scratches, consistent with light use. Some wear including fleabite to small-sized chips along the footrims. Several plates with fleabite chips along the extreme edges of the rim; two plates with large chips. Wear and losses to the gilt and pigment, especially along the border bands of the plates.
