Set 36 Spode ”Tree of Life” Dinner Plates - Spode, England. Group of 36 pattern 282 ”Tree of Life” porcelain dinner plates, ca. 1813. Marked with an imitation Chinese double ring mark and inscribed with pattern number in iron red. Provenance: Rochelle Thomas of Palm Beach - Fine Antique Porcelain, Palm Beach, FL, April 20, 1981; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. This pattern was first introduced by Josiah Spode II ca. 1801 and depicts a central gnarled tree with blossoms and bands of decoration. It is designed after Japanese Kakiemon designs. The pattern proved so popular that it was reproduced in 1813 as pattern 2038. (Each) Diameter: 9 3/4 in. Condition: To the majority of the plates, there are no breaks. There are four plates with hairline cracks along the rims; one of these plates has six toned hairline cracks along the rim, ranging in length from approximately 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch, and additional hairline cracks along the footrim and underside. There are two plates with possible, minute hairline cracks, or areas of toned crazing to the glaze: one plate with a minute Y-shaped crack along the underside, and one plate with a linear crack along the underside measuring approximately 1 inch. Some plates with crazing to the glaze. Some plates with fleabite to small-sized chips along the rims, and fleabite to moderate chips along the footrims. Wear to the gilt and glaze, including losses. To some of the plates, there are signs of possible restoration, specifically, small, scattered areas along the surfaces and undersides that fluoresce under UV light. Surface wear, including light scratches and accretions.
