Rare Shirayamadani Rookwood Pottery Gingko Vase - Kataro Shirayamadani (Japanese, 1865-1948) for Rookwood Pottery, Cincinnati, Ohio. Art pottery buttress-form vase, model no. 952C, 1905. Earthenware with glossy ”Black Iris” glaze. The architectural form carved with arboreal ginkgo tree motifs encircling the exterior. The buttresses seamlessly integrated into the composition, each vertical element articulated as a tree trunk rising in rhythmic intervals around the body. The dark, lustrous glaze pools within the recesses, accentuating the depth and sculptural quality of the carving. With maker's mark, date, model number, and faintly incised signature to the underside. Height: 11 1/2 in x diameter: 6 1/4 in. Condition: There is a small loss to the footrim. Crazing throughout. There are some areas that fluoresce under UV light where the accents of iridescent blue glaze are applied, largely along the trunks of the trees. The base is drilled.
