19th c. Zuni ”Deer in House” Polychrome Olla - Southwestern Native American Zuni Pueblo four-color polychrome pottery olla or water jar depicting ”deer in house” motifs, 19th century. Of full and rounded form with a short neck and gently flared rim. The vessel organized in layered horizontal registers; the central band depicting a procession of finely rendered ”heart-line” deer shown in profile, their slender legs and elongated bodies animated by delicate linework. Each deer framed by a geometric border composed of stepped forms, spirals, and triangular shapes. Executed in black, red, and orange pigment on cream-slip ground. Height: 10 1/4 in x diameter: 10 1/2 in. Condition: Wear commensurate with age. There are several repaired cracks and signs of restoration along the shoulder. There is crazing and scattered small areas of flaking to the pigment. Some chipping, as well as a small loss measuring approximately 3/4 inch along the lip of the vase. There is a linear firing flaw, some chips, and wear to the pigment along the footrim. Wear including a large chip to the underside.
