San Ildefonso B&R Ceramic Olla ca. 1890-1900 - Southwestern Native American San Ildefonso Pueblo black-on-red polychrome pottery olla vessel or water pot, ca. 1890-1900. Of shapely form, with flared rim and broad shoulder atop a rounded lower body, gently tapering towards the foot. The shoulder encircled by a repeating series of large triangular elements that descend toward a band of stylized and dotted floral motifs, each rendered with rounded petals. Beneath the shoulder runs a scrolling vine-like band punctuated by small circular dot elements and triangular forms, possibly symbolizing seeds or pollen, and signifying broader motifs of fertility and growth within the composition. Executed in black pigment on a red-slip ground. Provenance: By repute, Ex. Adobe Gallery, Santa Fe; Private Minnesota Collection. Height: 11 in x diameter: 11 1/2 in. Condition: Wear commensurate with age, including some crazing and minute losses to the paint throughout. There are two hairline cracks; one extending approximately 1 1/2 inches upward from the footrim, the other extending approximately 1 inch from the footrim. There are some areas that fluoresce under UV light, possibly inherent to the pigment used. Wear to the footrim.
