1871 Ulysses S. Grant Peace Medal w/ Trade Beads - A Reconstruction era bronze Ulysses S. Grant peace medal or medallion with trade beads, 1871. The obverse depicting President Grant in profile with unusual punched pattern to his right, a Native American peace pipe beneath him, surrounded by the text ”United States Of America, ” ”Liberty, Justice, and Equality, ” and ”Let Us Have Peace.” The reverse depicting a 36-star border, agricultural tools beneath a globe, and text reading ”On Earth Peace, ” ”1871,” and ”Good Will Toward Men.” The dies for this medal were engraved by Anthony Paquet. With strand comprised of Cornaline d'Aleppo or ”white heart” trade beads interspersed with Venetian brick red over translucent green heart beads, alternatively known as ”Hudson Bay” trade beads, ca. 1670-1760.
