Illustrated in catalogue as no. 15. Lot Essay: Ignacio Iturria is a celebrated contemporary painter known for his poetic, dreamlike works that explore memory, place, and the human condition. Originally trained in commercial art and graphic design, he later dedicated himself to fine art, developing a distinctive style marked by earthy tones, toy-like figures, and shadowy domestic settings. His imagery reflects both personal history and national identity, drawing inspiration from the landscapes of Uruguay and his Basque heritage. During the 1980s, he lived in the artists’ town of Cadaques, Spain, where his palette lightened and his visual language evolved. Iturria gained international acclaim with awards such as the Grand Prize at the Cuenca Biennial (1994) and a special prize at the Venice Biennale (1995). He has exhibited widely across Latin America, North America, Europe, and Japan, including major solo shows at the Havana Biennial and the Museum of Modern Art in Bogota. Deeply committed to community and education, Iturria founded the art school ”Casablanca” in Uruguay in 2002 and later the Ignacio Iturria Foundation to support emerging artists. He has also initiated artist colonies in both the U.S. and Latin America. His work, often compared to that of Philip Guston and Salvador Dali, evokes the psychological landscapes of his environment, particularly the murky Río de la Plata.
