Andre Lhote ”Le Marin Galant” Gouache Painting - Andre Lhote (French, 1885-1962). Gouache on paper painting titled ”Le Marin Galant (The Gallant Sailor), ” ca. 1925-27. Signed along the lower right. Depicting a barefoot sailor speaking to a woman along the dock. With a letter of guarantee signed by Jean Gouin, nephew of Andre Lhote. Lot Essay: Andre Lhote was a prominent French Cubist painter known for his work in figure painting, portraiture, landscapes, and still life, as well as for his significant influence as a teacher and art theorist. Initially trained as a wood sculptor in Bordeaux, he later studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and turned to painting full time by 1905. After early Fauvist experiments, Lhote embraced Cubism and joined the influential Section d'Or group in 1912, exhibiting alongside key modernists like Albert Gleizes, Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, and Jean Metzinger. Following World War I, he became a prolific writer and co-founded the Nouvelle Revue Francaise art journal. He taught extensively, founding the Academy Andre Lhote in 1922, where he mentored many notable artists, including Tamara de Lempicka, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Hans Hartung, as well as a remarkable number of women artists given the era. He also lectured internationally and collaborated with Egyptian artist Effat Nagy. Lhote received the Grand Prix National de Peinture in 1955 and was appointed president of the International Association of Painters, Engravers and Sculptors by UNESCO. He died in Paris in 1962.
