Kennard & Jenks Sterling Parrot Letter Opener - Kennard & Jenks (Boston, 1876-1879). Sterling silver letter opener. The handle with an ornate parrot pommel with red glass eyes and spherical pendants along the neck. The blade of scimitar form with ornate floral and vegetal engraving. Marked K for Kennard & Jenks and sterling. Interestingly, one of the few other documented letter openers of this design is in the collection of the Longfellow House Washington's Headquarters, in Massachusetts, part of the National Park Service. The letter opener in their collection was gifted by George W. Childs, editor of the Philadelphia Ledger, and friend of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Length: 11 1/2 in x width: 2 in x depth: 1 1/4 in. Condition: There are no large dents or signs of restoration. There is a loss to one of the beads applied to the pommel. There are a few light scratches along the flat edge of the blade. Some tarnishing throughout, mainly along the recessed areas.
