Afanasiev (Faberge Workmaster) Gilt Enamel Pendant - Fedor Alekseyvich Afanasiev (Faberge work master) plique a jour enamel and silver gilt vanity mirror pendant. The top of the pendant worked in delicate plique a jour enamel on a silver gilt frame depicting four cornflowers with a central oval opal cabochon of blue/green body color and red flashes, surrounded by enamel petals. The top slide open to reveal a gilt interior, formerly set with a mirror. Marked along the interior and reverse with kokoshnik mark for St. Petersburg 1908-1926 and 88 zolotnicki. Fedor Alekseyvich Afanasiev moved from rural Smolensky to St. Petersburg at age 13, where he began an apprenticeship in the workshop of Finnish goldsmith Enok Sistonen. Late, Afanasiev was employed by the workshop of the Court Jeweller Karl Bock. After qualifying as a master goldsmith in 1905, Afanasiev opened his own shop. During the period of 1907 to 1918 Afanasiev was contracted as an independent supplier and work master for Faberge. Afanasiev created a variety of objects for Faberge, including frames, parasol handles, dishes, pill boxes, scent bottles, seals and miniature egg pendants. He had a particular reputation for small silver gilt and guilloché enamel objects of vertu. Length: 71.75 mm x width: 42 mm. Gross weight: 31.6 g. Condition: All enamel present, some cracks. Minor tarnishing and light wear to the gilt, particularly at the contact points between the two pieces.
