John Anderson Abstract Painting 1953 - John E. Anderson (American, 1923-1971). Oil on board abstract painting in bright teal, red, yellow, orange, and blue, 1953. Signed and dated along the lower right; further signed along the verso. Lot Essay: John Anderson, born in Mankato, Minnesota, was an artist who spent most of his career in Minnesota, with significant periods working and exhibiting in Paris and New York City. After serving in the U.S. Army in England from 1943 to 1945, he trained at the Walker Art School in Minneapolis, graduating in 1948. He later taught there and worked as an exhibition assistant. Anderson exhibited widely, including at the Walker Art Center’s ”16 Younger Minnesota Artists” show in 1960 and multiple times at the Kilbride-Bradley Gallery. He also painted in New York City and participated in modern art exhibitions at the Guggenheim and Whitney museums in the 1950s. Notably, in 1956, he was commissioned to create a mural for Southdale Shopping Center, the first indoor regional mall in the U.S. His work is held in collections at St. John's University and the Walker Art Center. Some scuffs and chips along the edges, particularly the left and lower edges. There is an area approximately 2” x 1” along the upper right that fluoresces under UV light, possibly a repair. Housed within a wooden frame. Light wear to the frame. Not inspected out of frame.
