19-20th c. Chinese Carved Hardwood Scholar's Shelf - Late 19th to early 20th century carved wooden shujia scholar's shelf or bookcase with two drawers. Carved of a fine hardwood. Featuring four large open shelves with ample height, each with carved lattice fretwork and conjoined circle struts along the railings. The two drawers have finely detailed bas-relief carvings of scrollwork motifs and ruyi shapes along their facades and brass pulls. Below the bottom shelf are carved geometric aprons. Height: 78 in x width: 39 1/2 in x depth: 19 1/2 in. Condition: The shelf is structurally sound and stable. There are no major splits or stains and the drawers open and close smoothly. Light separation to the joints throughout. The left carved panel of the second shelf is detached from the body of the shelf, though it is able to rest in place and only noticeable upon movement. Light scuffs and scratches throughout, particularly along the surfaces of the shelves consistent with age and use. Light wear along the feet. Dust and debris gathered in the recessed areas.
