20th c. Suriname Carved Djuka Wooden Stool - 20th century South American Surinamese Djuka carved wooden stool. With a distinctive navette-shaped seat adorned with intricately incised round geometric motifs. The Djuka people are descendants of African Maroons who fled Dutch colonial enslavement in Suriname and French Guiana. Woodcarving is integral to Djuka culture and history. Height: 13 in x width: 20 in x depth: 8 1/2 in. Condition: There are no major breaks, splits, or losses to the wood. Some minute accretions and light scratches throughout. Wear along the top and to the feet. Light dust gathered along the surface throughout.
