18th-19th c. Portrait Painting of Girl with Dog - 18th to 19th century oil on canvas portrait painting of a young girl in a fine yellow dress with her faithful companion dog. Not only were the dogs in portrait paintings of these types a status symbol, but they also represented guidance, protection, loyalty, fidelity, faithfulness, alertness, and love among other virtuous traits. Unframed; height: 30 in x width: 25 in. Framed; height: 35 in x width: 25 1/2 in x depth: 2 1/4 in. Condition: There are no major tears or losses. The colors are slightly faded and there is craquelure throughout. When viewed under UV light, there are signs of inpainting visible throughout, particularly along the figure's face, arms, and dress. There is also an uneven varnish along the surface of the work. Housed within a wooden frame, not under glass or plexiglass. Wear to the frame including scuffs and chips, especially along the edges and the verso. Wear to the rabbat including a larger chip along the upper right center and lower right corner. Dust and debris gathered along the verso. Not inspected out of frame.
