Lot Essay: Peter Young began as an abstract painter in New York City in the 1960s. While he has continuously defied categorization, he would go on to be associated with the movements of Minimal Art, Post-Minimalism, and Lyrical Abstraction. In the 1960s the artist began to incorporate elements of Pointillism and Aboriginal art to create playful compositions of circles and dots. He focused on color and density to create monumental paintings, often on a monochromatic background. These clusters of dots created dizzying patterns and clusters of color, often only visible by stepping back and allowing oneself to experience the work as a whole, rather than as individual spots of paint.
