Lot Essay:
Jim Dine first rose to prominence in the 1950s in New York. He played a crucial role in the first "Happenings" and thereafter became associated with the Pop Art movement. He has also been closely associated with Neo-Dada and Neo-Expressionism. Common motifs in his art include hearts, bathrobes, tools, Pinocchio, birds, skulls, among others.
He has had over 300 solo exhibitions as well as retrospectives at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. His works are held in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Tate, among many others.
