Paul Jacoulet "Les Jades Chinoise" Woodblock Print
Paul Jacoulet (French, 1896-1960). Woodblock print titled "Les Jades Chinoise" depicting a woman dressed in finery against a red background with a dragon. Pencil signed and with a red boat stamp along the left edge of the image; further stamped and titled along the lower right corner.

Paul Jacoulet was born in Paris but grew up in Japan with his professor father, and from childhood cultivated an interest in Japanese woodblock printing, eventually forming his own extremely successful print publishing company, the Jacoulet Institute of Prints.

Height: 18 1/2 in x width: 14 in.
Condition: The sheet is toned. The colors are faded. Along the extreme edges of the image, the colors are more bold, likely due to a previous framing. The sheet is affixed to a black paper board backing; it has come loose in the lower right quadrant of the work. There is a small notch in the lower right corner of the margin. In the left lower center margin there are numerical inscriptions in pencil. There is a series of creases that run along the lower margin. Along the verso of the black backing there are several areas along the margins with losses to the top layer of paper. There are two large areas along the right and left sides with previous framing tape affixed. There is an area along the upper margin with residual adhesive from previous framing tape. Some light wear to the verso. The verso of the print could not be inspected due to the nature of the matting.
