Contemporary gouache on silk thangka depicting the bodhisattva Vajrapani, the “holder of a thunderbolt” (vajra). Depicted here in his wrathful form wreathed in flames in the Vajrayana tradition, he is additionally known as Guhyapati 'the Lord of Secrets." In the Sutra tradition of Mahayana Buddhism, Vajrapani is portrayed with a more peaceful appearance.
