Livingston, Mike, Saints (1), wood carving, signed in lower right, good condition, size: 33.25 x 18.75 x 3 inches, Mike Livingston has been an artist all of his working life. He was born in Kansas and never left---except for two years spent in the United States military, which included a tour of Viet Nam. After his return, Mike and his wife, Peggy, attended Fort Hays State where he was a Graduate Assistant before moving to Hutchinson in January of 1972. Mike built his own foundry and began his work in bronze sculpture (with Peggy helping pour on casting day). He still works in bronze, but no longer does his own casting---Peggy said “enough!”. In 1979, after a trip to the Metropolitan Museum in New York and viewing a show of 15 th and 16 th century Spanish furniture, Mike began designing and building one-of-a-kind pieces of wood furniture. He incorporated bronze into the designs as hardware, decorative details etc. For 25 years, he worked with designers across the country doing commissioned work. He has continued his furniture work with a line of sixteen small bronze tables, which are sold through Design Showrooms. His bronze vessels are represented in several showrooms and galleries also. While Mike has worked “three dimensionally” for many years, he has always had a desire to paint. He delayed taking this path until fairly recently. He has always been an avid supporter of all things Kansas, especially its beautiful skies and ever-changing landscape. Kansas, with such distinct seasons, is a continual lure for a painter. Mike thought that if he ever began the painting process, he would like to capture those images that have always been such an inspiring aspect of his everyday life---farm fields, ponds, livestock, tree rows, and, of course, that glorious sky in all its varied poses. These are images that anyone who lives or travels in Kansas can relate to. They are a part of who we are as Kansans.
