Chitwood, Avis (1893-1994) "The Old Paxico Mill" etching, pencil signed in lower right, good condition, image size: 6 x 8 inches. Born Mound City, Dec. 29, 1893; died Topeka, Jan. 25, 1994. Printmaker, specialized in rustic buildings, wildflowers, missions. Painter. Teacher. Illustrator. Studied watercolor with Mary Huntoon at Washburn College, Topeka; design and commercial art with Rosemary Ketcham and Clara Hatton at the University of Kansas, Lawrence; ceramic decoration with Walter Titze and Madge L. Gibbons of Kansas City. Illustrated a book of fairy tales by Louisa Cook Don Carlos, of Lawrence. Taught etching at Washburn College, Topeka from 1931-36. Taught adult education classes at Topeka High School and worked for the Kansas State Highway Commission from 1948-74. Primarily known for her depictions of wildflowers, rustic buildings, and missions.
