Vladimir Konstantinovich Shenk (1869-1947) - guards colonel of the Russian army, participant in the White movement in North-West Russia, military historian. He received his education at the Alexander Cadet Corps. On September 1, 1887 he entered military service. After graduating from the 1st Pavlovsk Military School, on August 9, 1888, with the rank of second lieutenant, he was enlisted in the 145th Novocherkassk Infantry Regiment (later transferred to the Life Guards Reserve Infantry Regiment). On August 10, 1893, he was awarded the rank of lieutenant. Afterwards, he graduated from the Nikolaev Academy of the General Staff in the 1st category. From April 5, 1898 - staff captain, and from August 10, 1901 - captain. From November 30, 1901 to April 9, 1905 he commanded a company. On November 15 of the same year, he was appointed assistant clerk of His Majesty’s Military Campaign Office, and on February 14, 1908, clerk of the same office. On March 5, 1911, Nicholas II approved the report of Major General Prince V.N. Orlov on the need to establish a “Commission for the Description of War Trophies of the Russian Army and Old Russian Banners, ” and Colonel Schenk was appointed its chairman.During the Civil War, he served in the North-Western Army established by the Supreme Ruler of Russia, Admiral Kolchak. After the Civil War he emigrated to Revel. He was also involved in buying and selling antiques. In 1939 he moved to Germany. After World War II in 1945, he was arrested and taken to the USSR.
The name of Vladimir Konstantinovich Shenk for many lovers of the history of the Russian Imperial Army is most often associated with his famous “Tables of Uniform Forms of the Russian Army, ” which was published in 1910. Less known is another, larger-scale work of this major specialist in the field of uniformology, one of the founders of this historical discipline in Russia. “Rules for wearing uniforms by officers of all types of weapons and civilian ranks of the Military Department” by V.K. Shenk came out, like “Tables of uniforms...”, in 1910. The “Rules...” of 1910 became the basic, most complete in terms of selection and execution, set of regulations regarding the rules for wearing military uniforms in Russia in the 1910s, on which all subsequent publications were based. Until 1917, additions and changes were made to the rules for wearing military uniforms, but such a complete collection of governing documents was no longer created. The “Rules...” of 1910 remained relevant even under Soviet rule: the draft “Rules for wearing uniforms for servicemen of the Red Army, ” developed in 1943 (but never officially adopted), relied heavily on the “Rules...” 1910 Colonel V.K. Shenk.
