Rabbi Yisrael Isserlein (1390-1460), author of Terumas Hadeshen, was one of the great Ashkenazic Rishonim, and one of the last of his era. He had a close relationship with the Maharil, Mahariv, and Maharam of Mintz, who all held him in the highest esteem. Terumas Hadeshen is one of the foundational halachic works, both Rabbi Yosef Karo’s Shulchan Aruch, as well as the Rama’s glosses on the Shulchan Aruch base many of their halachic rulings on the opinion of the Terumas Hadeshen. volumes 2: Psakim U’Ksuvim which includes teshuvos in practical halachah. The Achronim point out a fundamental difference with practical ramifications between the two volumes. The first volume is composed of the author’s own hypothetical questions, while the second volume is composed of practical halachic responses to queries posed to Rabbi Yisrael Isserlein and therefore carry greater authoritative weight.
