The Chida, in Shem Hagedolim, discusses the author's identity. He introduces the opinion of the Sefer Kore Hadorot, according to which the author is one of Ba'alei Hatosafot. Rabbeinu the Chida disagrees, proving that the author was from a later period and that his hometown was Narvona.
