Joseph Moses Abraham b. Aryeh (d. 1823) judge and preacher in Lazdijai, a small town in Lithuania located about 7 km (4.3 mi) east of the border with Poland. Jews first settled in Lazdijai around 1690. In the mid-19th century they comprised approximately 60 percent of the total population. Fires in the town resulted in the destruction of many of the houses and community buildings. Many Jewish tragedies are recorded for this ever changing town from Polish domain to Napoleon, to Lithuania.
