A disciple of Rabbi Akiva Eiger. One of the leading fighters against Reform Judaism. Following his Rav, he too started studying Kabbalah and by its influence, became close to the Chassidic Movement and its literature. In 1822, was chosen as Rav of Polshen, where he established a large yeshiva. In 1839, moved to Greiditz, where he became famed as a wonder-worker, with many coming to him for blessings and advice. He was a special figure in Germany, serving as a kind of Chassidic Admor, a rare phenomenon in Germany. His friend the Gaon Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalischer wrote of him: ”הגאון הקדוש האלקי מוהר”א גוטמאכר, אשר שקלה נפשו נגד אלפי נפשות בני ישראל, הן בתורה, הן בחסידות, הן בחכמת הקבלה, ואיש מופת הוא”.
