May he remember us in the holy days so that we can pray with good will and with a whole heart - a historical letter from Rabbi David Morgenstern of Kotzk to Rabbi Yaakov Aryeh of Radzimin to bless and be blessed for the New Year
The holy rabbi, Rabbi David Morgenstern of Kotzk, was born in 1809, firstborn son to his father, Rabbi Mendel of Kotzk "HaSaraf MiKotzk." He spent time with Rabbi Bunim of Peshischa as well. He succeeded his father as Admor in Kotzk and was known for his sanctity. He passed away in 1873, his tombstone bears the inscription: "The holy ark is buried here ... Master of scholars, crown of the wise and glory of the holy ... may the light of his Torah shine in us and may his sanctity cover our heads ..." He, like his father, did not write down his Torah thoughts, a small amount was printed in Lehavot Kodesh with Torah thoughts from his father. In 2007, his grandson, Rabbi Baruch Yitzchak Gutter published the book Ahavat David HaShalem with his Torah thoughts collected from books and manuscripts, and with his biography.
Rabbi Yaakov Aryeh of Radzymin (1792-1877) was one of the fathers of Chassidut in Poland. In his youth he learned from the Chozeh of Lublin and the Maggid of Kozhnitz and later from HaYehudi HaKadosh and Rabbi Simchah Bumin of Peshischa. After the death of Rabbi Yitzchak of Varki, he began to serve as a Rebbe in Radzymin. He lived a long life and was considered to be the “elder of the Rebbes” in his generation and very influential. He was well-known as a holy man and a miracle worker and many streamed to his court, among them famous Rebbes and rabbis. Among his grandsons who are named after him are the present Rebbes of Gur and Amshinov.
