He was the eldest grandson of the Alter of Ruzhin, son of his firstborn, Rabbi Shalom Yosef of Ruzhin. He grew up in the shadows of his illustrious grandfather and began serving as Admor at the young age of seventeen. His leadership influenced Romanian Jewry tremendously.
