In 1837 he was appointed Av Beit Din HaGadol in Izmir, which was comprised of 45 rabbis. He was appointed to the highest position in Izmir in 1855, ”Chacham Bashi.” This appointment was even confirmed by Sultan Abdulmejid I about a year later, with ”nissan” royal authorization. This gave him the authority to render judgements and to carry them out. He was entrusted with governing the entire Jewish community.
