Large Art Gilles Du Genet Painted Antique Wood Door Architectural Artwork - Large original artwork by Gilles Du Genet, painted directly on an antique rustic plank door or shutter with original iron strap hardware. Depicts an old European village architectural scene rendered in warm earth tones, with the aged wood grain, splits, nail holes, and weathered surface incorporated into the composition. Signed “Du Genet” at lower right. This item is in pre-owned, previously displayed condition with light wear and surface scratches/markings. Please reference all photos for full condition details. Artwork. 48” x 23 1/2” x 2 1/2”. Weight: 26.9 lbs. This item is originally from the collection of liquor icon Michel Roux. One of Mr. Roux’s signature spirits at Crillon was absinthe, the anise-flavored spirit known for its popularity among 19th-century artists like van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec. It was banned by the United States in 1912 amid concerns that wormwood, one of its ingredients, which contained thujone, caused hallucinations. In 2000, Mr. Roux introduced a legal absinthe, Absente, which used a sister botanical, Southern wormwood, with only trace amounts of thujone. A substantial and unusual example of the artist’s work, combining painting with an antique architectural element. From the personal collection of Michel Roux. Age-related wear, losses, cracks, and irregularities throughout the wood are consistent with the rustic nature of the piece. Du Genet is documented as a painter and art instructor in Provence, France, and his known work ranges from figurative abstraction to more traditional subjects.
