Gilles Du Genet Signed Rustic Wood Panel Landscape Artwork Geometric Design - Original signed artwork by Gilles Du Genet, hand-painted on a heavily constructed rustic wood panel with geometric framing and decorative vine motifs. The central scene depicts a European countryside landscape with a farmhouse, cypress trees, and a winding road. Signed “Du Genet” at lower right. Significant age-related separation/cracking through the center of the wood panel and frame, as pictured. This item is pre-owned and previously displayed, with light wear and surface scratches/markings. Please refer to all photos for full condition details. Artwork: 31” x 20 1/2” x 2 1/2”. Weight: 16.5 lbs. This item is originally from the collection of liquor icon Michel Roux. One of Mr. Roux’s signature spirits at Crillon was absinthe, the anise-flavored spirit known for its popularity among 19th-century artists like van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec. It was banned by the United States in 1912 amid concerns that wormwood, one of its ingredients, which contained thujone, caused hallucinations. In 2000, Mr. Roux introduced a legal absinthe, Absente, which used a sister botanical, Southern wormwood, with only trace amounts of thujone. A substantial and unusual example of the artist’s work, combining painting with an antique architectural element. From the personal collection of Michel Roux. Age-related wear, losses, cracks, and irregularities throughout the wood are consistent with the piece's rustic nature. Du Genet is documented as a painter and art instructor in Provence, France, and his known work ranges from figurative abstraction to more traditional subjects.
