Antique Mother of Pearl "Last Supper" Shadow Box Diorama
This a great local estate find. It's an antique, mother-of-pearl icon, that's been hand been carved, engraved and pierced within an olive wood frame. It can be hung on the wall or displayed on a flat surface. This diorama shadow box art piece features an intricate carving of Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper. The abalone shell work like this was typically done by Eastern Orthodox Christians in Jerusalem and Bethlehem called "Melchites". These icons were made for pilgrims to the Holy Land to bring back since the Grand Tour....the early 1830's through the mid Twentieth Century. Approximate Measurements Height: 16.5” Length: 15.5” Width: 4.5” This is as found with several areas of loss around the perimeter and some loose pieces. Please see photos. It only adds to the charm in my opinion and I am sure it can be restored should you choose too. See photos.
